In the midst of his longing for untouched, deafening silence, Jan Scheffler allows his gaze to wander. The sky, the earth, water, and light are calming, and with an understanding of this fragile beauty, he takes photographs. Over the past twenty years, Scheffler has been exploring the north through the lens of his camera. 89 Light tells the story of the days and nights, his hunger for this northern light, and the poetry of the landscape with which his identity has become inseparable. Scheffler’s pictures unite natural elements in a manner that is full of tension and yet at rest within the square of the images. At times it is the earth that takes up the space, or the sky displaces it, creating a feeling of safety in the knowledge that there is ultimately an order to everything. Scheffler has made a pact with the north, a pact with the light, to which he dedicated his first picture when he was twelve years old. His photographs from Iceland, Finland, and Norway are accompanied by poetic echoes by the artist Jacqueline Majumder.
